The BackPack Program is one of the many programs Food Bank for the Heartland supports to fight childhood hunger. We estimate that 1 in 6 children within Nebraska and western Iowa is food insecure. The BackPack Program is designed to provide meals for children on the weekends, who may not have access or limited access to food. In portions of the Food Bank's service area, the BackPack Program is the only food assistance option to which families have access. Each BackPack contains easy-to-prepare or ready-to-eat food items (see photo below for examples of items typically found in a BackPack). These items help nourish children over the weekend and enable them to thrive in school and better reach developmental milestones. Last year, this program provided over 1,286,528 meals to at-risk children across the Heartland.
